The following are English remedial/preparatory courses (4 credits) offered by FLC for undergraduates with MUET bands 1 and 2.

PBI 1112 Preparatory English 1

Course Synopsis : This course develops students' communicative ability in academic contexts in the university. The focus is on equipping the students to use the language skills relevant in the university. The emphasis throughout the course is on the authentic use of appropriate and accurate language for a variety of academic contexts..

Pre-requisites :Only for students with MUET Bands 1 and 2 (Must pass before proceed to PBI1122 Preparatory English 2).

PBI 1122 Preparatory English 2

Course Info

Course Synopsis : This course aims to strengthen students' communicative competence in English for academic purposes. The course enables students to further develop the skills acquired in Preparatory English 1. The students have the opportunity to use the language appropriately and accurately in various academic contexts..

Credit Hours : 2 (Class: 2 hours per week)

Pre-requisites : Passed PBI 1112 Preparatory English 1 or MUET Band 3

Generic Courses

The following are English generic courses (4 credits) offered by FLC Undergraduates with MUET bands 3-6 and those who have passed PBI 1122 Preparatory English 2 are required to take two (2) of the available courses.

PBI 1102 Academic English 1

Course Info

Course Synopsis : This course aims to develop students' ability to use of English for academic purposes in the university. The course enhances students' reading skills by teaching them how to extract information from different parts of the text. Students are taught how to paraphrase information from various academic texts to present their thoughts in spoken and written forms. They are guided to produce types of writing frequently required in university assignments using accurate citation and referencing conventions as well as appropriate structures and language features.

Credit Hours : 2 (Class 2 hours per week)

Pre-requisites : MUET bands 3 or passed PBI 1122 Preparatory English 2.

PBI 1072 English for Professional Communication

Course Synopsis : This course is designed to meet the needs of students to use English effectively in professional situations. It focuses on the development of appropriate and relevant language skills (listening, speaking, reading, writing) and language content that are directly applicable to a wide range of professional contexts.

PBI 1092 Academic English 2

Course Info

Course Synopsis : This course aims to develop students' ability in reading, writing and oral presentation for academic purposes. Students will be introduced to appropriate skills and strategies to facilitate the reading of academic texts in their particular disciplines. They will also be guided through the skills required in writing a variety of texts in their relevant fields of study.
