The following are English remedial/preparatory courses (0 credits) offered by Centre for Language Studies for undergraduates with MUET bands 3 and below.

PBI 0011 Preparatory English 1

Note: Undergraduates with MUET band 3 are required to take the above course or pass PBI0011.

Course Info

Course Synopsis : This course aims to develop students’ social communicative ability in English. Students will be taught to use English for a variety of everyday purposes. The focus will be on developing oracy skills. Both language fluency and accuracy will be emphasised. Students will be given the opportunity to explore authentic language use through a range of media such as computer courseware and audiotapes.

PBI 0021 Preparatory English 2

Note: Undergraduates with MUET band 3 are required to take the above course or pass PBI0011.

Course Synopsis : This course aims to further strengthen students’ social communicative competence in English for a variety of everyday purposes. Students have the opportunity to develop and integrate skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing. With a focus on literacy skills, students will engage with a range of text types and practise using language appropriately and accurately in meaningful contexts.

Generic Courses

The following are English generic courses (2 credits) offered by Centre for Language Studies. Undergraduates with MUET bands 4-6 and those who have passed PBI 0021 Preparatory English 2, or PRI 1013 English 1 and PRI 1023 English 2 (both are Pre-University Foundation Studies' English courses) are required to take two (2) of the available courses.

PBI 1012 English for Professional Purposes

Course Synopsis : This course is designed to meet the needs of students to communicate effectively using English in professional situations. It focuses on the development of appropriate and relevant language skills and language content that are directly applicable to a wide range of professional contexts. The emphasis throughout the course is on the authentic use of appropriate and accurate language for a variety of professional purposes.

PBI 1032 Academic Reading and Writing

Course Synopsis : This course aims to develop students’ ability in reading and writing for academic purposes. Students will be introduced to appropriate skills and strategies to facilitate the reading of academic texts in their particular disciplines. They will also be guided through the skills required in producing a variety of short texts in their relevant fields of study. The focus throughout the course is on how language functions in the academic genres covered.

PBI 1052 English in the Media

Course Info

Course Coordinator : Mdm Radina Deli

Course Synopsis : This course is designed to help students have greater understanding of authentic texts that are integral to our everyday world. It is an avenue for students to learn how to appreciate the English language and increase their level of proficiency. It provides them with the opportunity to explore and analyse written and spoken English texts of various genres in critical yet meaningful ways. It aims to raise awareness of the language and cultural issues encoded in the texts. In this way, it hopes to instill more interest in the language, inculcate positive values and thereby enhance students’ academic and social lives.

PBI 1062 English for Self-Expression

Course Info

Course Coordinator : Ms. Melisa Malini

Course Synopsis : This course introduces students to the excitement and satisfaction of using the English language for effective self-expression, in oral and written form. It progresses from reading and analysis of published creative writing (both local and foreign) to self-belief in their individual ability to use the language in a meaningful and substantive way to express themselves through the genres of short story and dramatic dialogue, and gaining self-confidence in the process.
